Supermarkets confirm sugar price increase
An increase in the wholesale price of imported sugar has led to an increase in the price of sugar at all major retail outlets.
Sugar is under price control however due to the high cost of imported sugar, the FSC has asked for a price increase to off-set potential major losses.
FBC News spoke to a number of supermarkets who confirm that consumers will have to fork deeper into their pockets to cater for the increase.
MH supermarkets only have 4kg sugar bags selling at $8.62, R B Patel is selling 2kg sugar bags at $4.35 while 4kg is being sold at $8.74.
Rajendra’s Foodtown is selling 2kg sugar for $4.39 while 4kg sugar is selling at $8.74.
This comes after the FSC increased the wholesale price of sugar from $1.43 cents a kg to $1.90 cents a kg.
FSC Executive Chairman Abdul Khan says the increase was necessary as the Corporation would have made a loss of $6 million dollars to import a total of 10,000 tons of sugar from Thailand.
