  • PUNE: Sugar mills in Maharashtra are getting Rs 29/kg ex-mill rate for the sweetener they export. This is Rs 3 more than the domestic market rate of Rs 25.70/kg in the state. Though sugar exports have finally begun after hiccups, the industry thinks no one is gaining in the process.
"There is not much financial gain for the industry as the export quota of each mills is very sm-all . Neither the exports will help ease pressure on stocks nor have helped improve the sugar price in the domestic market," said a source from the sugar industry. India is exporting 4.85 lakh tonne sugar . The sugar price in the international market is between $680 and $685 a tonne. This international rate works out to be around Rs 28.50 to Rs 29/kg in the Indian currency. Export houses are purchasing sugar from the mills at the ex-mill rate equivalent to the international price.
